Roger Arliner Young was a pioneering African-American woman in the field of zoology.

She was born in 1889 in Virginia and faced numerous obstacles throughout her life, including poverty and discrimination.

Despite these challenges, she went on to become the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in zoology and to conduct research at the prestigious Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Young's research focused on the anatomy of paramecium and the effects of radiation on sea urchin eggs. Her story is one of grit and perseverance, and she continues to be an inspiration to many.
