Don Walsh was a renowned American naval officer and oceanographer who made significant contributions to marine science through his pioneering deep-sea exploration. In 1960, Walsh became one of the first two people, along with Jacques Piccard, to reach the deepest point of the ocean, Challenger Deep, which is located in the Mariana Trench.

Walsh piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste, taking it to a record depth of over 35,000 feet below sea level (source). Throughout his career, Walsh conducted extensive research on oceanography and played a key role in the development of deep submergence technology. He was also involved in management of government research and development programs related to ocean science.

Walsh received numerous honors for his work, including election to the National Academy of Engineering. Sadly, Don Walsh passed away in November 2023 at the age of 92, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of ocean exploration and furthering
