Isabella Aiona Abbott was a pioneering marine botanist and professor who made significant contributions to the field of phycology, the study of algae. As the first Native Hawaiian woman to earn a PhD in science, Abbott overcame considerable barriers during her career in the early 20th century.

She studied algae found in Hawaiian waters and authored the definitive guide to marine algae of the Pacific coast of North America. Abbott discovered and named over 200 new species of algae during her research. In recognition of her groundbreaking work, she was named the "First Lady of Limu," establishing her legacy as a trailblazing scientist who increased global understanding of marine plant life.
