Captain James Cook was an English explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the British Royal Navy. He made significant contributions to the fields of cartography and marine biology through his epic voyages of discovery in the late 18th century.

As captain, Cook circumnavigated New Zealand and mapped its coastline in detail, becoming one of the first Europeans to visit the islands. During his voyages, Cook prioritized the collection of plant and animal specimens, facilitating some of the earliest scientific observations of the Pacific Ocean and its inhabitants.

He brought back thousands of plant and animal specimens, many unknown to European science at that time. Cook's specimens and observations represented some of the earliest contributions to marine biology as a scientific discipline and helped lay the foundations for future oceanographic and biological study.
