Featured Marine Biologist

Sir Charles Wyville Thomson was a pioneering Scottish marine biologist and oceanographer. Through his early expeditions dredging invertebrates in the seas around Scotland, Thomson developed a fascination with studying marine life. He would go on to lead the landmark HMS Challenger expedition from 1872 to 1876, the first true oceanographic cruise to study scientific phenomena in the deep ocean.

As chief scientist on the Challenger, Thomson directed dredging and trawling operations that brought back thousands of new species of marine organisms, providing a wealth of new discoveries about life in the oceans. His work revolutionized the field of oceanography and marine biology. Thomson's findings from the Challenger expedition were published in 50 volumes, establishing him as one of the founders of oceanographic research.
